1) I have heard the closer you shave, the more you are prone to get razor bumps. Is that true?

Skin health is extremely important, and yet many men struggle with pseudofolliculitis barbae, or PFB, a common skin condition characterized by skin lesions or razor bumps. It occurs when an ingrown facial hair triggers a foreign body inflammatory response.

Data from a recent clinical study dispels the myth that shaving daily with a multi-blade razor (which offers a close shave) worsens PFB. In fact, the findings demonstrate that a small but significant (10%) reduction in PFB lesions is possible after daily use of the Fusion® Power razor for 8 weeks when compared to men using their usual razors at their normal frequency of 2-3 times per week for 8 weeks. In addition, the clinical results allow the inference that shaving close to the skin’s surface daily may not impact PFB. Gillette® research also revealed that there are strategies that can help men who suffer from PFB, such as moisturizing the skin regularly and employing proper shaving techniques.

2) Can I just use a razor with soap and water, or are the benefits better when using more products while shaving?

Studies show that men need to strike a careful balance between cutting hard hair embedded in soft skin and leaving
the skin undamaged. Gillette® has developed products to improve the quality of the shave and drive comfort by looking after the skin before, during and after the shave. For instance, we are launching the first mass market men’s thermal facial scrub to remove dirt and oil before the shave and help soften beard hair, making it easier to cut. During the shave, the ideal complement to a state of the art razor is the right shaving gel, which further softens the beard hair and creates a protective layer of lubrication to maximize razor glide on the skin. After the shave, it is important to use an after-shave product containing moisturizing ingredients to rehydrate and comfort the skin

Additionally, Gillette® has recently conducted several clinical studies to show the benefits of an Advanced 3-step shaving regimen. The results consistently demonstrated that this 3-step regimen optimally hydrates skin and improves several self-reported characteristics of a smooth and comfortable shave. This was even demonstrated on men who self-identify as having sensitive skin in a dermatologist-consulted clinical study.

3) Can you explain the benefits of 3 blades vs. 5 blades?

The benefits of multi-blade razors were discovered in the late 1960s. When cutting a hair using a multi-blade razor, the hair undergoes a process called “hysteresis”, in which the first blade extends the hair out of the hair follicle and allows the subsequent blade to cut further down the hair shaft before the hair has fully retracted back into the hair follicle. This provides a closer, longer-lasting shave. As more blades are added to the razor, the probability of this process is increased. However, at least as important as the number of blades is the spacing (or distance) between the blades. The pressure exerted on the skin by the blades causes the skin to bulge between the blades. By having more blades and spacing them closer together, a more uniform stress is placed on the skin and the skin bulge is significantly reduced, leading to a safer, more comfortable shave.

4) What makes Gillette® Fusion® ProGlide™ better than other razors now?

Even with the razor advancements in the past 20 years, a lot of men can still experience shaving discomfort, especially if blades tug and pull. Gillette® Fusion® ProGlide™ and ProGlide™ Power razors added a series of new advancements to Gillette® Fusion®, the #1 Dermatologist recommended razor*, to help address skin discomfort and the root cause of tug and pull, delivering incredible comfort.

Two key innovations made to the razor are the low cutting force blades and the blade stabilizer:

  • Low Cutting Force Blades – the lead blades were re-engineered with thinner, finer edges – the thinnest in Gillette`s history – and finished with Gillette`s most advanced low-resistance coating. As a result, the blades are able to glide through hair with significantly lower cutting force for less tug and pull and a more comfortable shave.
  • Blade Stabilizer – supports each of the five blades at the center of the razor cartridge. Combined with blade springs, the blades adjust to the contours of a man’s face while helping to maintain an optimal blade span.

5) How can Gillette® Fusion® ProSeries™ skin care line help me?
